For Adora — Part One

Photo from wallpapercave.com

As I drove down the dirt road, a wooden fence stretched for several miles on my right. On the other side of that fence, a green meadow provided food for a herd of sheep, before I passed a barn with a wheat field behind it. Next came a small cabin.

Straight ahead of me, a few miles in the distance, sat a small homestead with a large line of golden brown craggy rock mountains jutting from the land into the beautiful clear blue sky lined with white cotton clouds.

I took a deep breath as I stared in awe at the beauty before me. How could anyone take in such a spectacular scene and still question the existence of God, the mighty creator?

An infant’s hungry cry broke through the majesty of the moment. I reached a hand over to the carseat buckled in next to me. “Shh, Adora, I know you’re hungry and your diaper probably needs changed, but we’re almost there. The homestead is just ahead.”

Adora cried louder.

I sighed. “Yes, I know. I, too, wonder if we will be welcomed or turned away.” I put both hands on the wheel again, gripping it until my knuckles turned white. “What will we do? Where will we go if he turns us away?”

The purr of an engine and the crunch of ground drew Griffin’s attention from the newspaper he was reading. He rose from his wooden chair at the oak table and Finnegan meowed from his mat by the fireplace. Griffin moved to the kitchen sink and looked out the window toward the road. He watched as a Classic 1968 red Ford Mustang drove toward his homestead, a cloud of dust in its wake.

“What the…” He leaned toward the window. “No, it can’t be.” He remained glued to the spot, his eyes locked on the car, as his heartbeat pounded a faster rhythm.

The Mustang pulled into the dirt lane and drew up to the front of the cabin, before it came to a stop. Griffin couldn’t move, as he waited to get a good look at the driver. Several minutes passed, his heart still thumped in his chest, causing him to wonder if he were having a heart attack, but there wasn’t any pain.

After several more minutes, the driver’s door opened and a brown leather boot beneath a bluejean-clad leg landed on his dirt lane. A petite woman, with chocolate brown waves of hair falling around her face, stood, placing a strawberry blonde infant on her hip.

Griffin’s breath caught in his throat and he coughed, trying to regain his breath. He watched as the woman stepped onto his front porch and approached his door. Still unable to move, even though the woman and baby were no longer in his line of sight.

Her knock seemed to loosen his feet and he moved toward the door with caution. He took a deep breath and blew it out in a great gust before opening it. When he did, his feet seemed to once again grow roots where he stood as he looked into the woman’s violet eyes. He cleared his throat, trying to dislodge the lump that seemed to prevent him from talking.

“Melisande, what are you doing here?”

“You’re a hard man to track down, Griffin, but I figured it was about time you meet your daughter.” She turned the baby on her hip, so he could get a better look at her face. Though her hair was strawberry blonde and her skin peaches and cream, she had her mother’s violet eyes. “This is Adora.”

The child stared at him for a moment, then began to cry.

“Look, can we come in? We’ve been on the road for days and stayed in a hotel or two, but we’ve been driving now for four hours straight and she’s hungry and needs a diaper change.”

Griffin’s head spun. Where? How … no, forget that one, he knew how. He couldn’t form words. He stepped aside and Melisande stepped through the entrance. He watched her eyes scan the kitchen and the open doorway to the living room. Then she looked at him. “You got an extra bedroom where I can feed and change her?”

He pointed her to the stairway along the right wall of the living room. “Up those stairs, first door on your left.”

Finnegan stood, arched his back, and meowed as he eyed the stranger, as Melisande walked past him without a glance.

Griffin watched as Melisande climbed the steps without hesitation, like she belonged here. A knot formed in his stomach. He’d left Melisande behind months ago, told her they were over. Now she was in his home and she had his daughter. His daughter. What on earth was he going to do now?

(Note: I had planned this to be a Flash Fiction story, but the characters in my head often take over and determine where the story goes. I wasn’t planning on a baby being part of this story, but as I was writing in a local coffee shop, she was suddenly there. And the last words I wrote in the coffee shop were “What will we do? Where will we go if he turns us away?” and when I sat down to finish the story here, I soon found that this is going to be longer than a Flash Fiction story. I hope you’ll enjoy it and go along for the ride. I’ll add to it every Friday until it comes to an end.)

The Harper Chronicles: The Wagging Tails

Trouble seemed to be a daily problem for Harper, until her mom bought a trumpet and gave it to her. Harper took to blowing the trumpet even better than she liked tromping through snow. She practices everyday and has become quite good at playing her shiny instrument.

Harper told some of her friends about her trumpet playing, and a few of them convinced their moms to get them instruments too. Now Harper has a band. They’re called The Wagging Tails. The band consists of a German Shepherd named Rin, who plays base guitar, a Golden Retriever named Trixie, who plays acoustic guitar, Harper on trumpet, and a yellow Labrador Retriever named Maurice, who plays drums. They get together at Maurice’s house twice a week for two hours. They spend the first hour writing songs and the second hour playing.

When they started playing in Maurice’s mom’s garage, the neighbors complained and howled, but as the band’s talents began to shine through, a crowd started gathering in the driveway to listen and dance. Now the band is the talk of Lancaster County and parents book The Wagging Tails to play at their childrens’ birthday parties.

Harper’s cousin, Louie, got jealous, but Harper said, “You get to go hunting with your dad to burn off your energy, so what do you have to be jealous of?”

“I don’t have any shiny instruments or toys to use to go hunting. I just wear a bright orange vest and tramp through the fields and woods. But it is exciting when I flush a rabbit out of its hole and Dad shoots it.” Louie said, with a grin.

Harper rolled her eyes. “I’ll take playing music and watching people dance over luring a rabbit to its demise anyday. My band’s music makes people happy. I like looking around the crowd at all their smiling faces.”

Her bandmates all barked their agreement. Harper’s dream is that the above painting of The Wagging Tails will one day be more popular than that old photo of all those dogs playing poker.

NOTE: This story is a work of fiction. Though some of the characters are real animals, names, characters, and incidents in this story are products of the author’s imagination or are used in a fictitious situation. Any resemblances to actual events, locations, incidents, animals, or persons — living or dead — are coincidental and beyond the intent of the author.

Bentonsport: A New Chapter by Lisa Schnedler

Bentonsport: A New Chapter is the second book of Lisa Schnedler’s duology. The first book is Bentonsport: A Christmas Story, which I read and reviewed for Clean Fiction Magazine. After reading the first book, I had to read this one to find out how things worked out or didn’t work out for Thomas Barton and Sarah Peterson.

Both books are time travel novels. In Bentonsport: A New Chapter, Sarah has gone 150 years back in time to join Thomas Barton in his world. Sarah is also from Bentonsport, but in a very different time period. This book is a fun read as Sarah, who is used to many of the modern conveniences that you and I live with in today’s world, must now do without such things as electric stoves and ovens, electricity in the house, cell phones, and many other things. In addition, she has to dress differently and live a different lifestyle than she is used to. She also has to be careful what she says to avoid appearing crazy.

This novel is a delightful read as Sarah struggles and, eventually, accepts her new world. Readers will also be delighted with some surprises in the story. You will also fall in love with some of the characters. This book will also make you laugh out loud on occasion.

An easy to read, clean fiction story, with a bit of the Christian religion mixed in, as well as adventure and fun is all to be had in Bentonsport: A New Chapter. I highly recommend this book, but strongly suggest you read Bentonsport: A Christmas Story first to fully understand and follow this sequel. However, I will mention that the first novel is a bit more serious, and sometimes intense and suspenseful. It seems to set things up for this book, but both are definitely worth the read!

I give Bentonsport: A New Chapter by Lisa Schnedler a 5 star rating.

The Harper Chronicles: Cat Patrol

“I hate cats!” Harper stood on her hind legs watching stray cats out the large front bay window. “They’re always using our lawn for a litter box. Grrr!” She plopped her front legs onto the floor and slunk toward the rear patio door. She was always on guard, watching the front and back of the house.

As she approached the sliding door, she spotted a gray cat on the back deck. Harper ran full speed toward it. When she planted her feet to stop, she slid into the clear door with a hard thunk! The cat startled and ran down the deck steps across the yard and out the back. Harper chuckled inside as she stood watching the gray animal disappear. “Stupid cat!” If only she had a doggie door, she’d show that cat a thing or two. But she knew why she didn’t have her own entrance/exit. Her mom, Kelly, wouldn’t take any chances of anything happening to Harper, and if she had a doggie door and got out of the house without a leash, she would chase every stray cat far from her neighborhood. She knew her mom was afraid Harper wouldn’t come back.

She lay on the floor, keeping watch until she heard a noise at the front of the house. She rose and dashed back to the bay window. “Ah, a van. I know what that means.” She watched until a man stepped out of the van and started walking toward her house, a couple packages in his hand. “Woof … woof! Woo – woo – woof!” Harper’s bark started low but increased in volume as the man drew closer.

To Harper’s disappointment, the man never looked toward the window where she stood, watching. He simply put the packages on the stoop, pointed his phone at them, pushed a button, then turned and strode back to his van, climbed in and drove away. Harper moved to the love seat where she jumped up and curled into a ball, disappointed that she’d failed to frighten the delivery man.

After a nap, she rose, climbed down from the love seat and returned to the window to look out once again. Movement to her left caught her eye and her heartbeat quickened. Two of her friends were out in their yard next door. Tequila and Whiskey, a reddish brown female Cavapoo and a curly haired white dog of which breed, neither her nor her mom knew. Harper attempted to jump onto the wide windowsill and barked.

“Harper, no.” Her mom commanded.

Harper tried again, this time knocking a couple of mom’s snowman knickknacks crooked, then trying to bite one of mom’s plants that was on the windowsill. Uh-oh, approaching footsteps. That meant mom was coming.

Sure enough, Mom arrived, hovered over Harper, and looked out the window. “Harper, you know Tequila and Whiskey. There’s no need to get so excited. Leave my plants alone, and look what you’ve done to my snowmen. Now get down!”

Harper placed her front paws back onto the floor and walked to the front door, where she rung her bell.

“No, you don’t have to go out to potty. You only want to go out because two of your friends are out.” Mom stated in a matter-of-fact tone.

Harper hung her head and returned to her comfy spot on the loveseat. Foiled again!

Introducing . . . HARPER!

Hi, welcome to The Harper Chronicles. I’m Harper. The above photo is me and my mom, Kelly, on my second birthday, which just happened on November 29, 2023. I’m 3/4 Labrador Retriever and 1/4 Boxer.

This is me when I was still in my very early months. Mom fell in love with my face the first time she saw me. She’s a writer and this is her blog on her website. She graciously agreed to allow me to introduce myself, but after this post, what you see of me will be whatever pictures Mom posts and stories she’s going to write and share about me. That’s why these posts will be called “The Harper Chronicles”.

Before that happens, I get to tell you that I am Mom’s third dog. She had two purebred black Labrador Retrievers, both male, before me. I was actually given, as a gift, to Mom the day after she had to say goodbye to her second Lab. It was a very hard day for her, but receiving me helped her feel better and she decided not to waste time building a very strong bond with me. That means I’m spoiled. I get lots of love and attention from Mom and some from the other members of our family. Mom buys great tasting healthy treats and lots of toys for me. She plays with me, sits with me, and cuddles with me. She also takes me places and takes me for walks.

I have been a challenge for her because I like to chew A LOT! She has spent a lot of time trying to teach me I’m not supposed to chew on people. I also have a lot of energy and I like to jump! That’s another thing Mom’s been trying to get me to stop. Apparently people don’t like it when dogs jump on them. I have gotten better in these areas, but I haven’t stopped completely.

I guess the last thing I’ll tell you is how I got my name. You see, Mom doesn’t like to give her dogs ordinary dog names. She likes to give them unique names. I think that’s the writer in her. The fact that I’m a girl was a bit of a disappointment to her at first, because she had a boy name already picked for her next dog. So, she was in a quandary about what to name me. She searched her bookshelves in hopes of finding a story character she liked enough to name me after. Yeah, she reads a LOT too. The boy’s name she had picked was a character from To Kill a Mockingbird, so when she came downstairs after searching her bookshelves to no avail, Dad asked her who wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. That’s how I became Harper Lee. Yes, Mom also gives all her dogs a middle name. Before me were Elvis Aaron (yes, named after the King of Rock and Roll), and Gentry Allen (not named after anyone. He was actually named for his gentle disposition), and now me!

I hope you’ll like the stories my mom writes about me. She’ll post them here on as many Wednesdays as she is able. I also hope her stories aren’t too embarrassing for me.

I don’t know if she’ll let me post here again, so “Goodbye”!

A New Year and New Things to Come

As 2024 begins, I am working on planning my weekdays to devote to writing fulltime. Yes, my dream has finally come true! Some of my plans include:

1) finishing final edits and formatting my first novel, for which I have found someone to create my cover. The goal is to have it available no later than the end of February.

2) writing my second novel, which I have already started, and my plan is to have this one published in time for Christmas 2024!

3) writing more posts here for all of you who make time to come here and read. One of the things I will be writing and sharing are more flash fiction stories, including a series I have in mind that will feature my beloved dog as the main character.

4) sharing contest links and updates to help promote Clean Fiction Magazine which is a great place to read reviews of Clean and Christian books to read, as well as some great articles and short stories.

I’m so excited and I hope you will enjoy finding more to read here on my blog. Of course, I’ll still be posting occasional Book Reviews here too, but remember, I strive to write 40 reviews a year for Clean Fiction Magazine, that’s 10 per issue, so if you can’t get enough of my reviews here, be sure to grab your copy of each quarterly issue of Clean Fiction Magazine.

Top Ten Christmas Movies

Photo by Chad Madden on Unsplash

This will most likely be my last post until after Christmas, as each day from now until Christmas has a busy schedule of grocery shopping, Christmas get togethers with friends and family and Christmas events at church. I hope you have enjoyed my three Top Ten Christmas lists, and I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and that you will focus on the true reason for the season — the precious Christ child who came to earth to give his life to save us from our sins so that we may spend eternity in heaven.

Again, I will list from #10 down to my #1 favorite.

10. The Little Drummer Boy — A stop-motion animated film from 1968

9. The Year Without a Santa Claus — A stop-animation film from 1974

8. Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas

7. Mrs. Santa Claus starring Angela Lansbury

6. Miracle on 34th Street starring Maureen O’Hara, Edmund Gwenn, and Natalie Wood (I watch this in Black and White)

4. Polar Express

3. White Christmas

2. It’s A Wonderful Life starring James Stewart (I watch this in Black and White)

#1. The Nativity Story (I watch this EVERY year on Christmas Eve)

Top Ten Christmas Carols

I must admit this Top Ten list was much harder to compose than the Top Ten Christmas Songs because I really enjoy so many Christmas carols. I could have added five more songs to the list, but then it wouldn’t be a Top Ten list, would it?

10. Away in a Manger

9. Go Tell It On The Mountain

8. Oh Little Town of Bethlehem

7. The Little Drummer Boy

6. We Three Kings

5. Silent Night

4. Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel

3. Oh Holy Night

2. Mary, Did You Know by Mark Lowry

AND

#1 A Much Newer Carol by Faith Hill

Top 10 Christmas Songs

A friend of mine, and fellow blogger, has been reading and commenting on my blog lately — from new posts to old ones. This has reminded me of fun posts I used to enjoy posting that I haven’t posted for a long time. One of those is “top ten lists” and it got me to thinking about how much fun it would be to create some fun “top ten lists” for the Christmas season this year.

Today, I am posting my first one, “Top Ten Christmas Songs”. However, first, I want to differentiate between Christmas Songs and Christmas Carols. Christmas songs do not include words about Jesus, wise men, angels, or any other people or items that Christians relate to the Christian holiday.

Christmas songs, on the other hand, include words about Santa Claus, bells, reindeer, sleigh rides, snow, etc. As a matter of fact, some of them don’t even have anything to do with the secular celebration of Christmas which includes Santa and his reindeer. Some songs that are only played at Christmas time are simply about snow and winter activities, like “Winter Wonderland” and “Frosty the Snowman”. Although these songs are all about winter, radio stations and stores stop playing them after Christmas, when they could play them all winter long, but they have simply become related to the Christmas holiday, even though some places don’t have snow or winter during Christmas time. (Example: Australia has summer in December when Christmas is celebrated).

So, today, I will be sharing my Top Ten Favorite Christmas Songs. I will begin with number 10 and work my way down to my #1 favorite Christmas Song.

You’ll want to come back next Monday for my Top Ten Christmas Carols, and then again, next Thursday for another Top Ten Christmas list.

10. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee

9. Winter Wonderland by Johnny Mathis

8. Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley

7. Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives

6. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) by Nat King Cole

5. Silver Bells by Johnny Mathis

4. White Christmas by Bing Crosby

3. Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano

2. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Andy Williams

#1. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays by NSYNC
