Movie Review: Peace River: God, Country, & the Cowboy Way

It’s been a long time since I’ve shared a movie review here on my blog. I subscribe to Great American Pure Flix to stream and watch family oriented and faith based films. Great American Family merged with Pure Flix on June 15, 2023, and though, Sony also is part of the company, I decided to subscribe on June 18, 2023. I used to subscribe to Pure Flix, but when David A. R. White and his wife, Andrea Logan White, who starred in many of the Pure Flix films and had something to do with running the company, decided to divorce, I noticed that quite a few movies Pure Flix began to offer were no longer as family friendly nor faith based, so I canceled my subscription.

So, when I found Great American Family Pure Flix and found that Candace Cameron Bure has a say in what they offer, after leaving the Hallmark movies because they began to offer themes that went against her beliefs, I decided to check out the Great American Family Pureflix offerings. I liked what I saw and subscribed and have been happy with all the movies I’ve watched on that streaming service so far.

So, now for my review of Peaceful River:

Peaceful River is the story of Casey, who comes from four generations of cowboys and military men. He grew up with a Mexican girl named Maria, and when he decided to enlist in the military after high school, he asked her if she’d wait for him. However, he participated in a high school rodeo, after which, he made some bad choices. Then he enlisted in the military and trained for special forces. He led a team of four other men in an operation in Afghanistan after the 9-11 attacks on the United States. When Casey finally came home, it seemed that he had lost everything that had meant anything to him.

I really liked this movie. I liked the way the characters developed throughout the movie. This movie was character driven and I came to care for the characters and wanted to see them succeed and obtain their dreams.

The war scenes were not gory, but they were definitely realistic and matched all that I had learned about the war in Afghanistan.

This movie gripped my emotions. Sometimes I smiled. Once or twice I lauged out loud. I also cringed and flinched at some scenes, and I shed quite a few tears.

I always say that books and movies that evoke so many emotions — emotions that make me both laugh and cry — are the books and movies I like most. They are also the books and movies I remember best and for the longest period of time.

I usually only need one tissue for books and movies that make me cry. It’s rare that I need more than one tissue, but Peaceful River was a two tissue movie for me.

I highly recommend Peaceful River for anyone who loves cowboy movies and movies that evoke lots of emotion. Peaceful River also teaches some great lessons in a strong, direct, but gentle way.

This movie is rated PG-13 for its adult themes. However, it is a clean movie, and as I said, it’s not graphic nor gory, and the Christian life and faith are woven throughout the story.

For Adora — Part 4

https://www.mustangspecs.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/13238952-1968-ford-mustang-std_f.jpg

Melisande stopped next to her Mustang, stiffened, but didn’t turn around. The warmth of Griffin reached her as he stood behind her.

“Melisande, please, don’t go.”

She drew in a long breath and let it out in a slow exhale before turning around. Her eyes locked with Griffin’s. “Why should I stay?”

He scuffed a boot in the dirt. “Because I’m sorry … sorry for leaving the way I did, sorry for cutting off all contact.” His eyes moved to Adora, who was looking at him. He stepped toward Melisande, his focus on Adora. “Sorry I didn’t know about our little girl, Adora. Where did you get the name?”

“In Greek it means ‘gift’. In Old German it means ‘beloved’, and in Latin it means ‘adored’. And even though you deserted me, I wasn’t going to turn my back on the precious gift you gave me, even if it did take me awhile to accept that my pregnancy was a gift instead of a mistake. You see, even though what we did was wrong, God doesn’t make mistakes, and He had a purpose in giving Adora to me.”

His eyes still on Adora, his voice cracked as he asked, “May I hold her?”

A moment passed. Then Melisande said, “Talk to her. Then reach for her and see if she responds well.”

Griffin slid his palms down his thighs, then he leaned closer to Adora. “Hi Adora. It’s so very nice to meet you.”

Adora smiled and cooed.

Griffin held his hands out in front of her. “Would you like to come to me?”

Adora bounced on Melisande’s hip, waved her arms up and down, and squealed. Then she reached out to Griffin.

Griffin took her and placed her on his hip, his gaze never leaving her face. When she babbled something, then smiled up at him, his lips spread into a wide grin. He faced Melisande and said, “I think she likes me.”

“Yeah, well, at her age, she’s a pushover.”

His grin slipped. “Will you come back inside and … stay? Give me another chance?”

A knot formed in Melisande’s stomach, even as her heart skipped a beat. Was she wrong in coming here? She studied Griffin and Adora. Their hair color and skin tone were an exact match. Even Adora’s smile matched Griffin’s. She had a right to know her father.

She met Griffin’s gaze. “Yeah. We’ll stay for a little while. See how things go.” She strode past him and led the way up the porch steps to the front door. She opened it and let Griffin carry Adora in as she followed.

It would be so easy to let Griffin into her heart again, but she’d have to fight that. He’d have to prove himself to her, for her sake, but especially for Adora.

NOTE: I’m thinking of ending the story here. Let me know, in the comments, if you’d be satisified with this ending.

The Harper Chronicles: Happy Valentine’s Day

Hi Everyone! Sorry The Harper Chronicles are late today. So, we’re also going to keep it short. Since today is Valentine’s Day, Mommy and I thought it would be fun to share a Valentine’s greeting with you that Mommy made with a photo of me when I was almost three months old.

We hope you enjoy it! Join us again next Wednesday for a longer post for The Harper Chronicles.

Parents Beware of Children’s Books That Tell Lies

As a Christian Homeschool Mom I was always very careful about what books I read to my sons, and what books I allowed them to read. My husband and I were also always careful what television shows and movies we allowed them to watch, and what music we allowed them to listen to. We wanted them to learn the truth of God’s word and wanted them to have Godly, positive influences in their lives.

Now they are all grown and making their own decisions, and my husband and I continue to pray that they choose wisely. My husband and I have always done our best to set the example that we taught them before them, though we are not perfect, and we made mistakes.

Now, along with all of the negative and inappropriate things we see in our government, in the media, online, and all around us in today’s world, it saddens me that children have become the targets for much of the evil in the world. They’re being told that if they’re a girl but would rather be a boy, and vice versa, that that’s okay. They’re bombarded with so many wrong suggestions and ideas, and the only people who can truly protect them and teach them truth are their parents.

Therefore, I am writing this post to inform parents that the above pictured children’s book, geared for children 2-7 years old, includes lies — lies about Jesus Christ, the perfect Son of God, who came to set an example for us and to die to save us from our sins.

The interesting thing is that I was told about this book just 4 days ago, on February 8th, and when I looked this book up on Amazon, the lie that it includes was part of the book description on Amazon. However, when I looked just before writing this post, the lie was no longer part of the description. So, what is the lie? This book, The Baptism of Jesus by Katherine Sully, a British writer who lives in Bath, England, teaches children that Jesus was baptized because he sinned, and that was specifically mentioned in the Amazon book description on February 8th, but has now been changed to simply state that John the Baptist was sharing his message and persuading people to allow him to wash their sins away. Then it states that Jesus came and asked John to baptize him, and afterward Jesus went into the desert where the devil tested him, but three times Jesus refused to be tempted. Then it says that after rebutting the devil, Jesus went to spread John the Baptist’s important message.

Even this description is a lie!

The Bible clearly explains both John the Baptist and Jesus Christ in John 1:19-34:

Now this was John’s testimoney when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Christ.”

They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”He answered, “No.”

Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the desert. Make straight the way for the Lord.”

Now some Pharisees who had been sent questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

“Ibaptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming towardhim and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but the reason I am baptizingwith water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

Then John gave his testimony: I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”

Scripture is from the NIV Bible.

February 15, 2024 UPDATE: I thought this book was a new release. However, according to Amazon, this book was released October 15, 2013, and Amazon is asking very high prices for it, considering it is a small children’s book. Prices range from $29.65 used, to $83.64 paperback, to $100 hardcover.

For Adora — Part 3

Griffin paced the living room. What was taking Melisande so long? Had she fallen asleep on the bed? He ran a hand through his hair. He’d dreamed of entering that room with her, watching her for the expressions on her face and in her eyes.

It had only taken him a couple months of being alone in Wyoming to realize he’d been foolish to leave Melisande behind. Then he’d bought the furniture and set up the purple bedroom just as she’d described it to him that night at Lookout Point — the night he’d kissed her for the first time. Her violet eyes had always drawn him in. He’d never seen eyes that color before and they were beautiful. Melisande’s every emotion shone through them with sparkles, flashes, and storms. He could drown in the depths of those violet pools. The day he’d told her they were over and he’d left, he’d seen the light in her eyes falter. Then they grew dark. He’d seen hurt in there. It had hit him like a fist to the gut, and still, he’d walked away.

The sound of movement at the top of the stairs interrupted his thoughts. He held his breath as he waited, his eyes on the stairway. When Melisande came into view, Adora on her hip, his breath caught in his throat. She must’ve brushed her hair, for now it hung in smooth waves around her face. Even with the dark circles of sleeplessness under her eyes, she was still beautiful. She stopped just a couple feet from the stairs and their gazes locked. Griffin couldn’t breath.

After a moment, his breath returned in a forceful exhale. “What are you doing here, Melisande? Did you come just to let me know about … the baby?”

Fire flashed through her violet eyes. “Her name’s Adora. And she’s only part of the reason for my coming. You left without any explanation and that has been eating me up inside. I can’t figure out what I did wrong.”

Tears pricked the backs of his eyes. “What you did wrong? You did nothing wrong.”

“Then why? I thought you loved me. You told me you did, and I … I gave you something that should’ve waited for my marriage bed.” She squeezed Adora closer to her side.

“I … I’m sorry. I was foolish and stupid, and as much as I wanted you, I … I didn’t want to be tied down.”

The corners of her mouth dipped into a frown and her eyes grew dark again. “Why did you come to Wyoming? What are you doing here?”

“I’m making rustic wood furniture and live-edge tables. I love it here in the mountains. In an area that hasn’t been developed into towns and neighborhoods. I breathe clean air.” His words came quick and he smiled.

She took a step closer to him. “You like being alone.”

His smile slipped. A moment passed. Then, “I did. At first. But I couldn’t get you out of my head.”

“Yet you never called. Not even a text. You haven’t even been back to see your parents.”

“It’s only been a few months.”

“A year, Griffin! It’s been a year. Right after you left, I found out I was three months pregnant. Six months later, Adora was born, and she recently turned six months old. Do the math.” She glared at him with a challenge in her eyes.

Griffin’s gaze dropped to the floor. “A year. How has that much time passed?”

“I guess you really do like it here by yourself.” She strode across the living room toward the kitchen.

Griffin turned and followed. “Where are you going?”

She spun around to face him. “I don’t know. But obviously you’re quite happy here. Alone. You don’t even realize how much time passes. I imagine you don’t need a woman and a child to ruin what you’ve obtained and are so happy with.”

Before Griffin could form a word, Melisande carried Adora through the front door. When it slammed, reality hit him. She was leaving. He ran after her.

“Melisande, wait!”

The Harper Chronicles: Snow Dog

Happy Wednesday Everyone! I love snow! I have, ever since I was introduced to it in the above photo, when I was about 10 weeks old. I like to run in the snow, but my favorite thing to do is to shove my nose in the snow and push it like a snow plow! That’s why there’s more snow on my nose in the above photo than anywhere else on me. It was finished snowing by the time Mommy took me out in this photo.

This photo is from two, almost three, weeks ago. This was the first time it snowed since I was just a puppy — first snow in 2 years! Mommy was surprised I still liked it so much, but I do and I still love to plow with my nose in the snow. However, I also still like to run in the snow, and if you look at my tracks in the above photo, you should be able to tell that I also like to go in circles. Mom keeps me leashed because she doesn’t want me to run off. (When I get on a scent or see a cat or a squirrel, I want to run after it.)

So that means I can’t run free in the snow. I could in the back yard, if we didn’t have to worry about all the cat poop from the stupid strays who use our back yard as a litter box. Grrr!

Well, anyway, while mom held my leash, I ran around her in circles! It was fun, and Mom was laughing really hard. I like to make Mom laugh. She was also trying to videotape me. She caught a tiny bit of video, but I kept getting out of her camera’s viewfinder. I would’ve shared the video here, but Mom can’t seem to upload her phone videos to her laptop, so you’ll just have to enjoy the still shots.

Not sure if we’ll get any more snow this year or not, but I sure would like one more good snow — this one started early in the morning, before Mommy woke up, and it lasted all day long, but it only dumped 3 or 4 inches. I’d like at least 6! Happy winter!

For Adora — Part 2

Luxury Log Cabin Washington from media.glampinghub.com

At the top of the stairs, Melisande paused to peek into an open door on the right. Her eyes scanned the rumpled bed, a pair of jeans, and a red flannel shirt tossed on the floor. Must be Griffin’s room.

She walked a few steps farther down the hallway and found a closed door on the left. She turned the knob and stepped into a room with a plush purple carpet and a queen size canopy bed with a bedspread and curtains, tied to each post, the same color as the carpet. Two large windows with sheer lavender curtains allowed the waning sunlight to shine through. She nearly tiptoed across the room to the bed afraid of tracking dirt on the carpet. She paused by the bedside and fingered the curtains attached to the nearest post.

Adora let out a wail, alerting Melisande to her reason for being in this room. She lay her baby on the bed and pulled a changing pad, container of wipes, and a diaper out of the bag. She changed her little girl, placed her back on her hip, then stepped over to a simple small vanity table and stool. She looked in the small mirror that sat on the table. “Ugh, there’ll be no impressing anyone looking like this — my hair needs brushed and there are dark circles under my eyes, and my lips are dry and cracked.”

Adora grunted and pulled a handful of Melisande’s hair. “Right. What am I thinking? He left me long ago without another phone call or text. No reason to think he’ll take me back now. Besides you’re hungry.” Melisande plopped down onto the vanity stool and opened the top buttons to the midway point on her blouse and positioned Adora to feed her. Adora latched on and sucked with fervor. “Ouch! Take it easy, Adora.” Melisande ran her fingers through her baby’s fine, soft strawberry blonde curls. Adora had Griffin’s hair color and skintone. She had his smile too. Yeah, every time her baby smiled at her, Griffin returned to her mind.

As Adora nursed, Melisande couldn’t keep from looking at that bed again. Why did Griffin have such a feminine room set up — a room in the color purple with a bed like she’d always wanted? Griffin had always been fascinated by her violet eyes. Said they were the thing that attracted him to her and that he loved best about her.

She closed her eyes and her mind went back to the night Griffin had taken her to Lookout Point back in Pennsylvania. They’d sat on a blanket on the bed of his pickup and watched the sun go down over the glorious mountain view. That night Griffin had kissed her for the first time. He’d asked her what her dream home looked like. She’d told him she didn’t have it all figured out yet, but she knew she wanted a front porch with a nice view, and she’d described her bedroom — this bedroom.

Two weeks later, Griffin had taken her to the beach. They’d walked on the beach hand-in-hand. That night, he’d talked her into getting a hotel room on the beach instead of driving back home. He told her he loved her, and she’d given him something she knew was meant for her future husband. After that night, she’d struggled with guilt over what they’d done, and Griffin had promised she had no reason to feel guilty. He’d promised he’d marry her, but when she wanted to know when, he said he had to figure some things out first. Three months of putting her off, and then he told her they were through and he left town without giving a reason.

Melisande looked down at her precious baby, the only thing about that night that she didn’t regret. Adora was sound asleep. Melisande brushed the backs of her fingers down the baby’s soft, warm cheek. “Oh Adora, did I make a mistake bringing you here? What on earth am I doing? We’ve traveled so far. What will we do if he throws us out? It’s a long trek back to Pennsylvania from Wyoming.”

The Harper Chronicles: My Energy and Curiosity Sometimes Cause Trouble

Hi Everyone! I’m back. Mom decided she liked letting me tell my own stories better than her telling them. She likes my style. lol

I have a lot of energy and I am very curious about things I see, especially things Mom tells me I can’t have. I also have some anxiety issues and don’t like a lot of noises. However, there are some noises that don’t bother me, like the plastic bags I am playing with in the picture above. Mom was sitting at the dining room table working on her writing, so I was walking around the dining room seeing what things were in that room. I found this whole bag of plastic bags, grabbed it, and took it into the living room. Then I started pulling all the bags out of the bag they were in. I was having lots of fun until Mom came and took the bags away. Before she did, I grabbed two of them and jumped onto the loveseat, the only piece of furniture I’m allowed to be on, and was chewing on them. She came to get them quickly — she said they’re a choking hazard.

In the above picture, I have an empty plastic water bottle. Mom, Dad, and their two grown sons all drink from these, then they throw them in a small box in the house, and when that’s full, they dump the bottles into a box outside and once a week a truck comes and takes them all away. But, Mom and one of the grown sons throw bottles from a distance and sometimes they miss. They always crunch them before they throw them, and when I hear that crackling noise, I watch and wait, and if the bottle hits the floor, I dash to get it. When I get it, I run into the living room with it and sometimes I lie on the floor and chew on it, and sometimes I take it up on the loveseat to chew on it — that’s where I am in the photo. Sometimes Mom lets me have it for a few minutes before she comes to take it away. Dad doesn’t like when she does that, but she says it doesn’t hurt me and she always watches me and takes the bottle before I get the label off because she doesn’t want me to choke. They don’t usually have the lids on them, so I’m not sure why the one in the picture has a lid on it. Actually, it’s not crinkled much either. Maybe I got this one when there was still a bit of water in it?

Anyway, these are some of the things I like to do sometimes when I want to get rid of some energy.
